+++ About this Exhibition +++
Our contemporary society is filled with the interesting and the mundane, with objects and bodies both spectacular and unnoticed. From architecture that protects us from the rain to the daily necessaries we require, and even to high-technology cosmetology, medical treatment and the like, these things that we rely on for our survival come together to create the richly diverse world we live in. Yet within each of these things, whether commonplace or rare, is hidden an abstract system which is hard to perceive. Here, each object, which was originally an independent entity, coexists within a single or multiple environments according to our needs and imaginations. This causes these objects to no longer be simple, emotionless things, as they are filled with the purposes (desires) of humanity! The concept of ‘design’ can be considered the clever behind-the-scenes creator of these various purposes.
In Second Skin, curated by Ellen Lupton, Curator at Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum, human skin serves as a metaphor, highlighting the organic quality of contemporary design. Emphasizing the intimate relationship between designed objects and the human body, the exhibition helps visitors to pierce through the surface of things to their very heart, exploring the hidden topics within our culture, bodies, technology and sexual passion; things that can memorize us.
